POTOPRENS: The story
There are these experiences that just change the way we live, the things we believe in, the way we see things. Sometimes they involve making new encounters, other times just rebounding with old ones, going back to ones roots, or again discovering a new place. The two days spent shooting take 1 of the potoprens project was a bit of all these things.
I received a call on Thursday night, from Fredo Dupoux, a long time super talented friend of mine, asking me if i wanted to join him and two other creatives in a photo walk around Port-Au-Prince the next day. I have a lot of difficulty refusing photo shoots, or photo walks specially in a warm Port-Au-Prince January weather.
So early next morning Fredo picked me up and there I met, Jeremy Cowart, whose I was big fan of his voices of Haiti project (a masterpiece by the way) and Cale Glendening, whose video work I was a big fan of, without even knowing it was his. So we took the the road, waited a while for gas, and drove towards downtown.
Arrived there, the city was up, people were having breakfast and were slowly starting their activities. We parked the car and stared walking. I am the kind who usually needs a warm up phase, I can rarely start shooting from the get go, I have to stretch my eyes. Shooting really started for me as were getting to the cathedral. If you ever be in Port-au-prince next to the cathedral, is probably the most diverse market ever, you’ll find anything, you might even find a dog with a cat’s head. it’s an incredible place, but once you climb the the steps to get in the cathedral, there’s a certain peace, it’s more silent, well let’s say less noisy, people are praying some sleeping other’s singing, the destroyed cathedral remains a place where people connect, and the spiritual presence is very strong. Naturally there, I found my self shooting. Not with the joyous heart, I usually do, but at the same time seeing it and recording it made feel good. The rest of the day and the day after we pretty much walked around town and snapped a
bita lot more. For those who have been shooting with me, or see me shoot you might have realized that I get in another zone, this time was no different, but I felt something i rarely felt before. I wasn’t the only one in my zone. Whether it was Fredo getting inspired by the sounds of the street, which I am dying to hear. Cale and his video footage, or Jeremy with his iphone (incredibly inspiring), we were all creating, having a good time, but mostly fulfilling desires that were personal. At the end Take 1 of the potoprens project was simply a life changing experience.
It confirmed:
- that creativity comes from within, not from equipment.
- that you never know what will inspire you
- that the world is not ready for the “genius” itsthefuture total goose experience
- and that I just love photography!
